First of May in Espoo, Finland
May Day is an ancient northern hemisphere spring festival. Known as Vappu in
Finnish, this is a public holiday for carnival-style street festivity. People
young and old, particularly students, wear academic caps and party outside or
have a picnic in the park.
Since I acquire all my academic degrees in
Taiwan, without the white cap as the traditional accessory, my picnic day
outfit on May Day is a bit Rock ‘n’ Roll: Prada 100% UV sunglasses, Zara Lambskin
biker jacket, Zara cotton robe, Louis Vuitton wool cardigan, Gina Tricot high
waist jeans, YSL espadrilles, for sac I carry See By Chloé calf skin shoulder
bag to lighten up the rather darker touch. Combining designer’s wear and high
street for the casual look is what I am always interested in, by doing so
not just only make a balance of purchase budget, but also can practice
mix-and-match ability for the outfit, since it is quite impossible to put on
designer’s names from head to toe day by day. Still I realize that a pair of comfortable and stylish espadrilles is my summer essential, I choose YSL by Hedi Slimane, place an extra leather inner sole to support the walking and prevent the scratching of my toes.
We take a bottle of sparkling wine, a box
of grapes and some snack, take a short walk for 20 minutes, climb up the hill
to have a bird view at picnic moment. Espoo Park nearby our flat is good enough
since we try to avoid the unnecessary crowd. It is slightly windy, on the top
of the hill, still it is very warm enough to take off the jacket and robe to
chill out. Though we do not have sima nor tippaleipä in hand, we enjoy this
simple picnic, a lovely time and good conversation on May Day. Buds are
waiting, birds are singing, summer has come around!!
